BARLEY

Barley is an annual long-day plant. It is used as malt and feed… Globally, barley production comes fourth following corn, wheat and rice among grains, while coming second following wheat in Türkiye.
Nearly 67% of the global barley production is used as a feed, while 21% of it is used for industrial purposes. Only 5% of the barley output is used as s food. It can be consumed as a direct ingredient of feed rations in the animal production operations. Besides, barley is also an important raw material of barley malt industry. It is also used as an ethanol production input in a slight quantity in the EU.
Produced in all regions of Türkiye, barley comes second following wheat among field crops in terms of cultivation area and harvest quantity. Considering the last decade, barley cultivation areas vary between 2.4 and 3.0 million ha, while the output quantity between 6.3 and 8 million tons (TMO (Turkish Grain Board), 2020).

World barley cultivation area rose nearly by 1% during 2020/21 production season to 51.7 million ha and the production thereof by 1.9% to 159.7 million tons.
